Success and direct selling was a family affair for AtHome co-founders
and sisters, Lisa Brandau and Becky Wright, who grew up in the
south suburbs of Chicago. Their mother, Alma was a very successful
distributor for Queen's Way Home Fashions. As children,
they helped their mom with her Queen's Way business by stamping catalogs
and occasionally modeling fashions at her in-home presentation.

In 1982, as young moms with growing families,
Lisa and Becky loved decorating, and would often travel
to country stores looking for home-decorating accessories.
They began to think that if they had to travel to find great
accessories, other people did, too.
So Lisa and Becky decided to open a store to meet that need.
The Country Peddler was born. Their business style was
warm and welcoming. They enjoyed getting to know their
customers and their customers' individual style.

Less than two years after opening their first store,
Alma posed a question: "How are you going to serve all
the people who can't travel to your store?" Enter the
Country Peddlers and Company of America, a direct-selling
company that offered home-decorating accessories through
in-home demonstrations, called Gatherings. The people
who held the presentations were called Peddlers.
The extension of their company into direct selling presented
another opportunity. In addition to great decorating accessories,
Lisa and Becky could offer others a home-based business
opportunity - the same great opportunity that allowed them
to spend more time with their families, as they enjoyed
earning great incomes.
Between 1982 and 1987, they opened two additional retail
stores, running the stores alongside their direct-selling
venture. In 1991, Becky and Lisa decided to sell the stores,
and focus exclusively on direct selling, so they could reach
out to even more people with their exciting business opportunity.
In 2002, The Country Peddlers and Company of America changed
its name to AtHome America. While the product line continued
to include country collectibles, it expanded to offer a wider
variety of home-decorating accessories in different styles to
meet the needs of more people. The company also introduced
online shopping.
