Basic Lawn Care
As the old saying goes, "the grass is always greener." Do you look at other
lawns with envy and wonder how in the world you could capture that lush, green
look yourself? Here are some simple basic lawn tips to help you on your way!
First, water infrequently. This will force your grass roots to go deep into
the soil. By going deeper, this will discourage weed growth and encourage a
thicker lawn.
Water grass when it begins to curl. Next, fertilize! Grass needs nitrogen to
grow and the best way to get it is to supplement with fertilizer. Check with
your local nursery about what fertilizers works best with your soil and grass
types. If you have weeds, also check with the nursery to see how best to eliminate
them - weeds are often a sign of unbalanced soil, so you may have to add nitrogen
or other nutrients.
Finally, set your lawn mower higher. In fact, set your mower as high as it
will go (3 to 4 inches). Many people are tempted to cut the grass short to make
a longer time till the next mowing, but this actually kills grass. The more
sun the grass gets, the better it will grow. By cutting grass short, you are
letting sun get to the weeds - which will grow and choke out your grass.
