How to Mix and Match Prints like a Design Pro
Rule 1: Stick to a Color Palette
The simplest way to mix patterns is to begin with a unifying color palette -- pick two or three colors you like together. Keep to these colors when choosing pillows. Even though the prints themselves vary, the overall effect will be harmonious.
DESIGNER TIP | Take a cue from the catwalk and treat an animal print like a neutral. Browse Pillows.
Rule 2: Balance the Scale of Patterns
Different patterns in the same scale will look busy and crowded. Instead, alternate small, medium and largescale prints to create a sense of balance.
DESIGNER TIP | Graphic black and white paired with more colorful patterns elevate your style quotient.
Rule 3: Mix Opposite Graphic Styles
Combine a variety of print and pattern styles. Try mixing organic patterns, like florals, with structured or geometric prints like stripes, chevrons or basic shapes. This contrast of different styles provides visual interest and will keep your décor looking fresh.
DESIGNER TIP | Pair thicker-lined patterns with more intricate ones to add varying degrees of dimension.
