Pick A Perfect Umbrella

Umbrella Experience

BEFORE YOU START

When shopping for some shade, you need to figure out which size to buy first. Measure how much space you have and how much coverage you want. Your outdoor umbrella should be about five feet larger than the area you want shaded.

1. PICK THE PERFECT POLE

Do you want to easily move your umbrella from poolside to patio? You need the versatility of a freestanding center-pole umbrella. Looking to cover a large lounge area or deck? A sturdy offset umbrella is just the thing. Want to add some shade to your table? You could go for a classic center-pole design or an offset style.

Accent Furniture CENTER-POLE UMBRELLA

Also called a market umbrella, it has a straight pole in the center of the canopy and sits in a base on the ground. It can be used with a dining table or as a stand-alone shade solution. Some feature tilting mechanisms that let you adjust for the angle of the sun.

Rugs OFF-POLE UMBRELLA

Also called a cantilever umbrella, it has a jointed pole off to one side. Made to shade a large area without getting in the way. (Think hot tub or the outdoor table during game night.) It requires a heavier base but can be tilted and adjusted as the sun moves.

2. CHOOSE YOUR FAVORITE SHAPE

It’s about form and function. First, consider the size and shape of the area you want covered. (Certain shapes work better with certain spaces.) Next, think about the vibe of your outdoor spot. (The shape of your canopy will put the finishing touch on your outdoor aesthetics.)

3. PICK YOUR BASE

A base is essential for keeping your umbrella upright and secure in bad weather. Exactly how much your patio umbrella base needs to weigh depends on size and type. A table umbrella gets some support from the furniture, but a freestanding umbrella will need more weight to remain stable.

4. DRESS IT UP WITH ACCESSORIES

Entertain into the evening with clip-on lights, or add some ambience with string lights wrapped around the pole. Attachable heaters and fans help you work with the weather, while portable speakers help you work on your dance moves.

TIP: Make sure to use safer LED lights, which produce much less excess heat than traditional bulbs. Better yet, use solar lights for endless portability and versatility.

PROTECTION & STORAGE

Real talk. We know it’s a hassle, but the best way to make your umbrella last is to close and cover it whenever you’re not using it. To minimize wrinkling and preserve the look of your canopy, wrap all the folds in the same direction before placing it in the storage bag.

TIP: Store your umbrella in an upright position. Laying an umbrella on its side puts extra weight on the rib assembly and makes it more likely to be crushed under other items.
