The Most Commanding Command Center

Home Office Hacks

Whether using your home office for coordinating the family's affairs, your own home-based business or both, here are some design essentials for maximizing that space - and your own productivity.

1. FACE THE DOOR

To minimize distractions and keep yourself from looking over your shoulder, your office arrangement should allow you to face the door when you're seated at your main work station. This way, there are no surprises and you'll be able to stay focused on the task at hand.

2. MAKE YOURSELF COMFORTABLE

Your desk and chair are two of the most important pieces in your office. This is where you'll spend the bulk of your time, so go for comfort first and aesthetics second. Luckily, you can find lots of options with both form and function. Come in to see for yourself!

The Chair Checklist

1. Arms or no arms? The answer may depend of the type of desk you have: desks like the one above with an open design may call for the structure of arms, whereas a larger, more traditional desk with a confined seating area may be more comfortable without.

2. Softer or more sturdy support? Just like buying a new mattress, this is one of those decisions you can't just leave to fate. Go to the store, directly to the office chairs and test them out. Take your time.

3. Modern, traditional, all-purpose? Start by identifying the style of room or even a few key accessories you absolutely loveto build around. You can also take our style quiz for a little extra guidance.

4. Don't forget about a sweet seat for your guests. Accent chairs or benches make for great additional seating.

GOOD TO KNOW: Most office chairs are height-adjustable so you'll always have plenty of knee room under your desk, regardless of the height. (The average desk height is 30")

Just the Right Desk

Chairs and décor may come and go, but a good desk may be with you for a lifetime. One of the first considerations is size. If you're in a compact space, a smaller and sleeker desk will give the illusion of a larger area. On the other hand, if you're in an open space, a larger desk with some weight may help visually balance the room.

3. LIGHTEN UP

Natural light is the best, so if your space has a window, let as much of it in as possible during work hours. Natural light improves alertness and also helps regulate your circadian rhythm for better sleep at night.

The Sheer Truth

Instead of standard curtain panels that block much of the light even when they're open, opt for sheer window treatments that will provide privacy and light.

If you don't have enough natural light, you'll need a combination of general and task lighting. Any lamp or fixture will work as long as you have the right bulbs. Go with LED for general lighting and halogen for task lighting.

4. KEEP IT CLUTTER-FREE

You've heard the old saying, "A place for everything and everything in its place." There is a reason you have. Messy workspaces typically contribute to feeling overwhelmed and give off a general sense of disorganization. Make office storage & organization a gift you give yourself.

Insider Tip: Unsightly Cords

We've all been there. It's easy to get overwhelmed by all of those cords. Whip them into shape with a basket or stylish storage box.
