3 Tips for First Apartment & Dorm Decor  

Just starting out? Whether you're moving into your first dorm room or post-grad apartment, a lack of square footage has the potential to put a damper on your decor. Luckily, we have some great tips to help you maximize your space without sacrificing your style.

Dark walls and furniture pieces can shrink your space. Instead, opt for light paint colors and airy items that will make the room seem bigger and brighter. Don't feel like you're stuck with only pastels, though. Light walls with bold furniture will also create an open feel. 

Skip paying extra rent for loft-style ceilings, and instead go for floor-to-ceiling curtains that trick your eye and create the illusion of height. Hang your curtains as close to the ceiling as possible and let them touch the floor to create a dramatic effect.

2. Dual-Purpose Furniture Pieces   

The right furniture can also play a big role in adding style and size to your small space. Think about what furniture pieces can be combined to do double duty. A dining room table that can easily act as a great desk or workspace. A functional bar cart can be a kitchen island and storage during the week, then convert to a drink station to host family and friends on the weekend. 

Large, oversized furniture can quickly take over and make your apartment or dorm feel cramped. Instead, opt for small or medium pieces that serve their purpose and still leave you with breathing room. 

Consider incorporating some acrylic or glass furniture into your small space, as these pieces almost disappear from sight, keeping your room from feeling overstuffed. The ghost-effect also adds a sleek, modern tpouch to any room. 

3. Smart Storage   

Everyone's got stuff. Even if you're just starting out in your first place, you're bound to need a lot of storage, and your dorm or apartment is bound to be lacking it. The good news is that storage doesn't have to take up any more of your floor! Take advantage of vertical space with shelving units and baskets to store bed, bath and kitchen essentials. Pick shelves and baskets that reflect your personal style to make this solution part of your decor.  

Don't forget to use your furniture for storing your stuff! Under bed storage is a great way to neatly tuck away out-of-season clothes or extra linens. You can also pick tables and other furniture packed with drawers to get some extra storage without sacrificing more of your tiny floor.
